Two Louisiana PR Students Honored with Scholarships by Public Relations Association of Louisiana

Two exceptional Louisiana public relations students have been awarded $1,000 scholarships from the Public Relations Association of Louisiana (PRAL). JoLena Ann Broussard of New Iberia, a junior in LSU’s Manship School of Mass Communications, was selected to receive the Jack H. Sanders Memorial Award. Kirsten Michelle Howard of Shreveport, a junior attending LSU-Shreveport, was honored with the William Michelet Honorary Scholarship.

The Jack H. Sanders Memorial Scholarship is presented in memory of the first president of PRAL and a visionary in the area of public relations. Scholarship recipients must demonstrate proficiency, excellence and dedication to pursuing public relations knowledge.

JoLena Broussard

Broussard maintains a 4.0 grade point average, receiving honors such as the Chancellor’s List and the LSU Black Faculty & Staff Caucus Academic Achievement Award. She is an active member of the LSU Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America, serving as co-director of its student-run public relations firm. She is also a Manship Ambassador and co-founder of the Student United Way at LSU.  She is the daughter Joseph and Ivy Broussard of New Iberia.

The William Michelet Scholarship is awarded annually in honor of Bill Michelet, former LSU professor, PRAL founder and accomplished public relations practitioner. It is awarded to a student who has demonstrated proficiency in the field of public relations with a strong commitment to community involvement.

Kirsten HowardHoward maintains a 3.48 grade point average, having been inducted into the Phi Sigma Iota International Foreign Language Honor Society and serving as treasurer of the Lambda Pi Eta National Honor Society. She has distinguished herself as a leader in the student community as an active member and two-time tournament champion of LSUS’s debate team. Howard’s community activities include volunteer work with nonprofit organizations, including the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse of Northwest Louisiana where she serves as their development assistant, the Girls Scouts of Louisiana and Christian Service Program. Howard is the daughter of Shannon Hammond of Bossier City.

The scholarships will be presented during upcoming chapter meetings of PRAL’s Baton Rouge and Northwest Chapters.

The Public Relations Association of Louisiana is a statewide association serving nearly 300 public relations professionals in five member chapters throughout Louisiana (Acadiana, Baton Rouge, Central, New Orleans and Northwest). PRAL provides networking, professional development and accreditation (APR) to its members, and is a member of the Southern Public Relations Federation (SPRF), which includes PR organizations in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and northwest Florida.
